Field Guide has been one of my favourite spots in Halifax for a while now. The atmosphere is great, the food is delicious and the cocktails are excellent. Recently they close down for a new renovation and menu overhaul. I won’t lie, I was nervous because of how much I already loved the place, but I’m glad to say there’s nothing to worry about and if you were a regular before, you’ll be sure to go even more frequently now. And if you’ve never been, you’re definitely missing out.
I arrived on a Friday night, just after 5. We were the first table there, but over the next hour and a half the place quickly filled up.
We ordered the following for cocktails:
Mah Nuia – Jamaican & Barbadian Rum, Amaro Nonino, Crème de Cacao, Toasted Pecan, Orange and Lime.
This cocktail was giving me all the tiki, tropical vibes I wanted and it was one I could drink all night long. It had a delicious creamy, nutty flavour to it with a refreshing hit of citrus.
Space Juice – Dry Gin, Amontillado Sherry, Anisette, Saffron, Tumeric, Honey, and Lemon.
This drink felt like an alcoholic juice cleanse, it was refreshing and tasty and also tasted like it was good for you (most likely the honey and tumeric).
Cooler Cup – Pimm’s No. 1, Aperol, Absinthe, Grapefruit, Lemon, Ginger, and Cucumber.
This one was personally my least favourite but only because I don’t love absinthe. I found the cucumber and ginger though really made me like it. All the ingredients really worked well together.
And now for my favourite part, the food:
This is the Radish Salad with cucumber and walnut oil. This is honestly one of the best salads I’ve ever had. Perfect flavour balance and a great choice for the summer!
This is the Shrimp Tostada, with apple and mint. No word of a lie, this is now one of my favourite dishes in all of Halifax. I could eat 3 of these in a row, they are so good! It’s a crispy fried tortilla shell underneath with shrimp, apple, an avocado cream and lime on top. It was perfect, 10/10, everything good I love about the summer season of food to come.
We also tried the loaded potato, cod taco, pork carnitas taco, falafel bao, and beef tartare. The food was just so good I stopped taking pictures because I was too busy eating.
Overall, I just have to say this is by far one of the best restaurants and bars in Halifax and one of the best spots for good time summer vibes.
