Let me give you some cold, hard truths about waffles. 1) Everyone loves waffles. 2) If you don’t, you’re a psychopath with no taste buds. 3) Even if you are a psychopath with no taste buds, you’re going to love Halifax’s newest Japanese waffle joint. I never knew what my life was missing until I bit into that sweet, beautiful, fish-shaped, chocolate & hazelnut filled waffle. Three of the greatest food inventions of mankind: guacamole, pizza bagels, and now, taiyaki.
What’s a Taiyaki?
A taiyaki is a Japanese fish-shaped cake made using traditional waffle or pancake batter. It imitates the shape of Tai (Japanese Red seabream). It is also the origin of the name, taiyaki literally translates to “baked sea bream.” The taiyaki is claimed to be originated from a small store in Tokyo in 1909. Taiyaki is now widely sold worldwide becoming many Japanese people’s comfort food that helps get them through a cold, brutal winter. The most common filling is red bean paste that is made from sweetened azuki beans. Other common fillings may be custard, chocolate, cheese, or sweet potato.
Taiyaki + Halifax
Taiyaki 52 is a Halifax based dessert cafe offering these Japanese inspired waffles. They offer ingredients that are carefully chosen by using local suppliers in Halifax. Open Tuesday – Friday from 9am – 9:30pm, Saturday 9:30am – 10pm, and Sunday 10:30am – 9pm. Yes, that’s right, you can get yourself some late night waffle cravings too!
As soon as I saw pictures of these waffles I knew I had to go. I can truly say I was not disappointed.
Below are pictures of their full menu:
You can choose to have your waffle in original batter, crunchy, or vegan! Then you can pick to have one or more of the following fillings in your waffles: chocolate hazelnut, matcha, red bean, vanilla custard, blueberry, or blueberry & cream cheese.
I had the “Bourgeois,” which has two taiyaki with fresh fruit, chocolate drizzle, and whipped cream. I chose the crunchy batter with one waffle filled with blueberry & cream cheese and the other filled with chocolate hazelnut. My friend, Megan, had their special, the sweet & spicy pulled chicken sandwich. We both really enjoyed each of our dishes. I was stuffed with just the two waffles, but I made sure to finish every bite because they are too good to leave behind.
I have also previously tried the mini gang in the vegan batter with red bean and blueberry filling. Definitely a lighter bite than the bourgeois but they are so scrumptious bite-sized. And I have to say the vegan batter is super good! I found it very light and fluffy. Next on my list will be to try the “Jaw Dropper.” Soft serve ice cream, either mango, matcha or twist, in a taiyaki cone with filling! Yes, your jaw did just drop.
They also have a great selection of cafe drinks, as shown above, and an amazing selection of teas, as shown below.
If you LOVE waffles then this is going to be your new favourite spot!
You’re welcome 😉
